ROBERT J. UPLINGER Past International President Past International President Robert J. Uplinger was elected president of the International Association of lions Clubs at the association's 54th annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in June, 1971. Past President Uplinger, an industrial engineer and consultant, was founder and owner of Robert J . Uplinger, Inc., Syracuse, New York and is now retired. A member of the Syracuse Host lions Club since 1946, Past President Uplinger has held numerous offices including that of Club President, zone Chairman, Cabinet Secretary, District Governor, Chairman of the Council of Governors and served a two-year term as a member of the Association's Board of Directors from 1964-66. He has also served on the Executive Committee of Lions Clubs International Foundation. He was a member of the International Board (3rd Vice President -1968) when LCIF was activated in San Antonio, Texas, and the First Officers of LCIF were elected. Past President Uplinger has represented lions Club International at the United Nations, New York as an NGO representative since 1973. Past President Uplinger was instrumental in establishing "Lions Day with the United Nations." For his many contributions to the association Past President Uplinger has received many awards including the 100% District Governor Award, the membership Key Award, the advancement key award, two extension awards, the service award, the New York State Council Award, numerous International President's Awards, and the Ambassador of Goodwill Award, the highest honor granted by the association to members. He also is a Melvin Jones fellow. During his presidency, Past President Uplinger proposed to the International Board at Lake Placid, New York, October 1971, that they adopt the "second half" of Helen Keller's request of 1925 to make hearing conservation and work with the deaf a major activity of the International Association of lions Clubs. It was adopted by unanimous vote of the international board. Past President Uplinger has received many awards for this action, including the solidarity merit award from the world federation of deaf, the world congress deaf award and was also honored by the Empire State Speech and Hearing Clinic. He also is listed in "Who's Who in America." Past President Uplinger and his lovely wife, Martha, have two children; lion Robert, Jr., Abstractor, Great Bend, Kansas; and daughter Karen, Attorney, Syracuse, New York; and three grandchildren. |
